HOLLAND, Mass.-Lt. Col. Richard A. Lamphier, 62, a retired Army officer and proprietor ot Colonel Lea Black Angus Farm, died Saturday morning.
He was a World War II veteran serving with the Army Transportation Corps in the South Pacific.
A Holland resident for the last 10 years, Col. Lamphier was born in Watertown, Nov. 19, 1916, son of Andrew and Margaret (Cloherty) Lamphier.
He graduated from the Boston English High School in 1928, and from the Bentley School of Accounting in 1931.
Col. Lamphier was a member of the Holland Board of Appeals and, was a former town assessor.
His military service brought him the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal and the Navy presidential unit citation.
He was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Co. of Mass., the National Retired Officers Ass'n., the Pioneer Valley Retired Officers of Mass., Holland Post 422, American Legion.
Col. Lamphier was a past president of the Mass. Department of Retired Officers, past national commander of the Military Order of Foreign Wars.
Besides his widow, the former Elta (Preuss) Lamphier, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Joan) Powell of Holden, two brothers, Dr. James Lamphier of Winchester, and Dr. Timothy Lamphier of Miami, Fla., recently retired from the Lahey Clinic; four sisters, Mrs. Francis Fontana of Cambridge, Mrs. Herbert (Josephine) Adams of Wellesley, Mrs. Mary Cummings of San Francisco and Mrs. Edward Fitgerald of Nyack, N.Y, six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A military funeral will be held in Arlington National Cemetery, Va., Wednesday at 11 a.m. Williams Funeral Home of Southbridge is in charge of arrangements.
