Alfred Wood
From Arlington book: He was educated in the district school, and then learned the trade of carpenter with his brother John, working for him for a time. Later he worked at blacksmithing with his father, and finally started farming on the home farm, working the place on shares.
Just before his marriage he purchased a farm of two hundred and seventy-five acres in South Rawdon, known as the old Ross place. He remained there about thirty-eight years, raising general farm produce and live stock. He sold his farm to James Hopkins and removed to Brooklyn Newport, Nova Scotia, where he engaged in the cattle business, butchering for the market, and also kept a grocery, seed and feed store.
After being engaged at this business only two years, he died, his death occuring April 14, 1906. Mr. Wood was a hard-working man; was of medium height, of a social nature, was popular in social life, making many friends. He was Liberal in politics, and served as justice of the peace, trial justice, assessor, overseer of the poor and road commissioner. He was a man of strong principles, adnw as brought up in the Methodist faith, but became a member of the Latter Day Saints at Rawdon and was a teacher in the church.4

James Wood II
From Wilfred Wood: [He] was born in Berwickshire, Scotland, August 9, 1799. Received his education in his native land and learned the blacksmithing trade from his father.
When 16 years old he came to Nova Scotia with his parents and settled in Rawdon, working at his trade with his father. He later purchased a farm, but preferred blacksmithing to farming. He conducted a large business, and was considered a fine workman. His shop was located on his farm at Wood's Corner, on the road from Uniacke to Rawdon Gold Mines. He was a lover of horses, and owned some fine stock, having a reputation as a veterinary.
During his later years he suffered from palsy. He was a Methodist. In politics, a Conservative.
On December 23, 1824 he married Martha Haley of Rawdon. To this union, twelve childred [sic] were born - eight boys and four girls. His wife preceded him in death (1870) seven years.
January 17, 1877 he bade farewell to friends and surroundings, passing peacefully away at the age of 76 years, 5 months, and 8 days.2

Timothy Houghton
From Houghton Family: The writer of the Halifax record of Timothy says he came of a race who had been soldiers in the old and new worlds; his mother was Mary, daughter of Henry and great grandaughter of Major Simon Willard, in whose hands the early legislature of Massachusetts placed the command of various expeditions against the marauding savages. Captain Timothy began soldiering young and had seen much service. We find him from April to November, 1754, on the eastern frontier in Col. John Winslow's regiment. In the Crown Point expedition, Aug. 9, 1755, he was adjutant in Col. Samuel Willard's regiment. In 1756 he led a company largely recruited by his lieutenant from Walton, Mass. While in the east he saw Nova Scotia for the first time, and subsequently obtained 100,000 acres of land for himself and fifty-two others, settled at Chester, where mani fo his descendants are now, and whence many migrated to all parts of the world. He had fought on the banks of Lake Champlain, saw Port Royal once, and many other points were traversed by him.5
